Magic: The Gathering’s Mystery Booster returned in 2024 as Mystery Booster 2, and was first released as part of the Festival in a Box launch at MagicCon Las Vegas in August of that year. Designed for Chaos Draft, this mystery booster run has an incredible 1451 cards, all of which are reprints from throughout MTG’s history.

The utility of this card is what increases its price, and it also features some intricate artwork to compliment its functionality. Urza is shown here with his arms up in a commanding stance with symbols and equations flying out from his raised hand, showing his powerful status.

Cabal Coffers By Don Hazeltine – $18.65

Cabal Coffers is a powerful land card which acts as a mana ramp, since you tap it to generate one black mana for every swamp you own. You can generate a huge amount of mana very easily, allowing for some powerful combos. Especially if you can pair it with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, which makes all your lands swamps.
As well as its amazing utility, the card also boasts unique and thematic artwork. A shadowed figure in a doorway looks out across a dark vault, seemingly shimmering as if on fire. The looming walls and etched face evoke the eeriness of this room with a Mirari visible in the corner.

Wasteland is often considered a necessity for Legacy play as not only does it generate colorless mana, but it can also be used to destroy an opponent’s nonbasic land. When dual lands are in play, this card will help you keep their power in check.

Thornbite Staff is a card which is often underestimated. The power in this artifact comes from the fact it’s untapped whenever a creature is sent to a graveyard. This can lead to deadly combos for those who use it wisely, especially with commanders like Ghoulcaller Gisa or Yisan the Wanderer Bard.
In terms of the artwork the staff dominates the image here, highlighted by the beam of light shining through it. The background is very shamanic, with fallen trees, rocky crags and the beautiful sunlight beam. The staff is one with the elements.

Isochron Scepter By Mark Harrison – $13.65
Reprint From Mirrodin
The Isochron Scepter is a powerful artifact which allows you to cast cheap instants or sorceries repeatedly for very little cost. It can be used in a lot of different ways, including creating almost infinite combos with cards like Paradox Engine, or dominating the board when combined with counterspells.
The artwork here is from the Mirrodin set and shows a woman holding out a scepter and focusing intently as a large wave of energy pulses from it. You can see the power and strength the card has reflected in the image.

Displacer Kitten By Campbell White – $13.25
Reprint From Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur’s Gate
The displacer kitten essentially acts as a blink, moving cards in and out of the graveyard. This allows you to re-trigger any effects on a card which are activated when the card enters the battlefield. Combined with a card like Spellseeker you can create some powerful combos.

Bolas’s Citadel allows you to not only take a look at the top card of your deck, but also to play it using health instead of mana. It’s especially powerful if you can heal up, then use it to burn through a game-winning combo you don’t have enough mana to pull off.
Bolas’s Citadel is a domineering presence on this card. The ancient and mystical-looking building has channels running down the front of its brickwork, with an eerie green glow behind them. The city in front is swamped by the height of the citadel, which is topped off with a crystal ball emitting streaks of purple lightning across the sky.

Culling the Weak allows you to generate mana by sacrificing creatures. It can be effectively employed in a range of control and combo decks, especially where you can easily generate creatures to sacrifice.
Although the frame has changed, this artwork was originally found in Exodus. It shows a domineering group of robed figures surrounding a bound and defenseless creature. They bear weapons ready to sacrifice the creature they deam a weak link, perfectly reflecting the card’s name.

Brainfreeze By Tim Hildebrandt – $8.06
Reprint From Scourge
Brainfreeze is an essential card for any deck employing a mill strategy. It’s a low-cost card which allows you to instantly mill three cards. By employing combos wisely, especially in storm decks, you can use this to blast through your opponent’s deck on the way to victory.
This brainfreeze artwork is very clear, as we see a creature hanging from a net over a rocky cliff as an icy blast hits him directly and freezes his entire head. The icicles across the back suggest this is a spell effect, fired at great velocity to create a literal brain freeze.

Deathrite Shaman By Steve Argyle – $7.65
Reprint From Return To Ravnica
Deathrite Shaman uses the exile mechanic to fulfill several different roles. It can generate mana, deal damage, disrupt a graveyard, and heal. It’s low cost and versatility makes it a powerful card for black/green decks in particular.
The shaman pictured here is very much conducting a deathrite. He’s locking eyes with a skull, floating slightly above his outstretched arm, while his other hand holds a staff. A circle of skulls and bones surround him, drawing a circle of death against the dark and eerie background.
