GTA 6 Fans Have A New Theory About The Game's Release Date

Fans have already kickstarted the next “big” Grand Theft Auto 6 theory, this time about the game’s release date.
As it turns out, the May 26 date is the real-life date that Bonnie & Clyde had their funeral services back in the 1900s.
The infamous lovers and criminals are believed to be a direct inspiration for GTA 6’s own protagonists.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just one day after it was announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 would miss its original Fall 2025 launch window and instead be delayed into 2026, fans have concocted a new theory. Bear in mind, immediately following the delay, fans began airing out their frustrations, with many saying their hype had died.

As first shared by a GTA 6 fan on Twitter, the new date for the next entry in the franchise, May 26, 2026, also happens to be the anniversary of the funeral of Bonnie & Clyde — the infamous early 1900s criminal couple, largely known for their bank robberies and other escapades.

Now, why is this important? Well, some believe — and there is good evidence — that the story in GTA 6 will be Rockstar’s own take on the real-life Bonnie & Clyde. The first and only trailer hinted as much, helping add to that existing theory.

According to the Texas History Notebook, a blog about historical matters in Texas, Clyde’s funeral services were held on May 25, 1934, at sunset, with Bonnie having her services the next day, May 26, in the early afternoon. A newspaper clipping from the era also confirms as much, with the paper noting that 50,000 people came to see the bodies of the duo before they had private funeral services.

In other words, this actually did happen and is not a made-up theory by GTA fans a la the moon theory. Next year, May 26 happens to fall on a Tuesday, the day that Triple-A games have historically been released before Friday started becoming more popular. Whether it’s a friendly coincidence or deliberately chosen by Rockstar remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say hype has gone back up.
