The Best Azorius Lands For Commander In MTG

Share

Summary

  • Include strong land cards like Seachrome Coast for early game potential in an Azorius deck.
  • Prioritize mana fixing with Mystic Gate’s versatility in casting spells with varying mana requirements.
  • Consider key lands like Temple of Enlightenment for both mana generation and utility, like scrying.

Azorius is one of the stronger color combinations in Magic: The Gathering. It takes the protective and angelic powers of white and combines them with the spell-heavy control powers of blue to create a combination that covers for each of their flaws.

Having multiple colors means you need to make sure to include the right land cards to generate the mana you need. In Commander, you can use almost any land card you like from MTG’s history, but it can be tough to know which to include. Luckily, there are a few that standout from the rest as the strongest of Azorius.

Azorius Chancery

A Fair Trade

Many lands are limited to only generating one mana per turn, but some allow for multiple at the cost of a harsh drawback. In Azorius, however, they are lucky that Azorius Chancery exists. This land can grant you one white and blue mana every turn when tapped, only requiring you to return one of your controlled lands back into its owner’s hand when Azorius Chancery enters.

This is effectively not a downside, as, while having to remove one of your lands from the battlefield is bad, if you take back one of your lands that just generates mana, you won’t be losing any value. This is why Azorius Chancery is so widely played, it is one of the best lands to get both mana types while also accelerating your mana.

Port Town

Revealing Your Plans

Port Town (Rare, 1019) By Kamila Szutenberg From The Set Commander Masters Of Magic: The Gathering.
Art By Kamila Szutenberg.

Many land cards require you to satisfy their enter the battlefield conditions with some board setup, making them hard to use in your early game, but Port Town is the opposite. Port Town is a land that is commonly used because of how easy it is to get quickly onto the battlefield as early as turn one and start tapping for blue or white mana.

This is due to it being able to enter the battlefield untapped by revealing a Plains or Island land from your hand. Since these two land types are super common, it is simple to open a game with one in hand. Just revealing a single land card is more than worth it to get colored mana, and many run Port Town because of how rapidly it can enter and provide its mana.

Temple of Enlightenment

The Path To Victory

Temple Of Enlightenment (Rare, 1041) By Piotr Dura From The Set Commander Masters Of Magic: The Gathering.

Temple of Enlightenment is a land that provides you with both mana and utility through how you use it. When entering the battlefield, it enters tapped but does allow you to instantly scry a card from your library. Then, once untapped, you can start tapping it for either blue or white mana with no downside.

MTG decks need great commanders if you’re playing that format, and these Azorius commanders can fit the bill.

Keyword actions such as scry always have a big presence in many decks because of how useful they are in Commander. Since you have a huge deck consisting of 100 different cards, often times they are not all equally useful. Being able to scry using Temple of Enlightenment is great, but also having the option to keep it in play to generate mana is what makes it excellent.

Glacial Fortress

Practically Free Mana

While alot of lands have drawbacks in order to balance them, some such as Glacial Fortress are super easy to work around. The caveat of Glacial Fortress is that it is a white blue mana-generating land that can create one mana when tapped however it enters tapped unless you control a Plains or Island land.

While Glacial Fortress does require a Plains or Island type land to be under your control to enter untapped, these types are some of the easiest to bring into play. These basic land types can both be fetched from your library using fetch cards and, with this in mind, Glacial Fortress can enter untapped almost always. Making it a free white blue mana generator that has no downsides.

7

Adarkar Wastes

Not A Wasted Deck Slot

It’s important to include different ways to generate the mana colors you need and one of the most common in Commander is the trade of life for mana. Adarkar Wastes is one of the most efficient lands as it can be instantly tapped for either one colorless mana or instead one white or blue mana at the cost of dealing one damage to you.

This land can be used as early as turn one, as life is a cost that doesn’t require any set-up to use. In Commander, you start out with a large total of 40 life and many end up using their life just as much as mana to build their board. This is why Adarkar Wastes is so used, as it can easily get your set-up ready for a trivial cost.

Tundra

A Vintage Classic

5

Tundra (Rare) By Jesper Myrfors From The Set Revised Edition Of Magic: The Gathering.

This land is one of the most recognizable despite its minor printing history. Tundra is a land that is perfect, entering the battlefield untapped and allowing you to tap it to add either white or blue mana. You can instantly make use of this card to mana fix your board and, since it is both an Island and a Plains land, it can be easily fetched.

Tundra is the very best land for any Azorius deck, but we have put it higher on the list due to its low availability. The last physical tournament-legal printing of Tundra was all the way back in 1994, and it has sat on the reserved list since then. Many Azorius players would do anything for a copy for Commander, but due to its collectible vintage status, this land is not cheap to get your hands on.

4

Deserted Beach

Don’t Desert It From Your Deck

Deserted Beach (Rare, 276) By Jonas De Ro From The Set Innistrad Remastered Of Magic: The Gathering.

Sometimes it can be a challenge to get your cards to enter the battlefield untapped in Commander due to only having one of each card, but with Deserted Beach it is simple. Deserted Beach is easy to get value out of, and it is an icon for many Azorius decks. All you need to get it to enter untapped and start generating white or blue mana is to have two other lands under your control.

While it may feel awkward to start your match with Deserted Beach in hand, it can be useful for ramping, and it is even more useful in the late game. With it in your hand, you know you can get colored mana on turn three or earlier and can use the other turns to set up a strategy around it to take advantage of its powerful mana gain.

3

Sea Of Clouds

The More, The Merrier

Sea Of Clouds (Rare, 84) By Florian de Gesincourt From The List Reprints Of Magic: The Gathering.
Art By Florian de Gesincourt.

This land is one that plays off the number of opponents you have against you, making it excellent in Commander but bad in one-on-one formats. Sea of Clouds can be the perfect land for mana fixing in Azorius, giving one mana of white or blue when tapped, but unless you have two or more opponents, it will enter the battlefield tapped.

In Commander, you will likely be against at least two people, meaning Sea of Clouds is perfect for mana fixing in Azorius that cannot be matched. The only caveat is that if you are in late game and there is only one player still standing, it will enter tapped, but at this point you will likely have plenty of options that make this less of an issue.

2

Prairie Stream

A Balanced Version Of Tundra

Prairie Stream (Rare, 167) By Adam Paquette From The Aetherdrift Commander Azorius Precon Of Magic: The Gathering.
Art By Adam Paquette.

Many land cards require you to pay to obtain your much-needed mana but with Prairie Stream you just need to be careful about when you play it. If you currently control two or more basic land cards, Prairie Stream enters the battlefield untapped and, when tapped you get to add either blue or white mana.

Prairie Stream feels like a modern take on Tundra since both share the same land types and ability, and it is simple to get Prairie Stream to enter untapped or even fetch it. This is why it is such a powerful land, as the second you have two basic lands, you can play it untapped, creating colored mana earlier than most lands can.
