Summary
- Ring of Arcane Locks can seal and open magical barriers.
- Gauntlets of Defense reduce the chances of incoming ranged attacks.
- Boots of Water-Walking negate water terrain, reduce fall damage, and hasten combat.
Powerful magic items can make all the difference in a high-level Dungeons & Dragons campaign, especially for expert, veteran players. However, you can actually take these items even further by homebrewing your own, rather than waiting for your Dungeon Master to dole out the exact piece of magical treasure that you want. But if you’ve never homebrewed before, even as a high-level player, you might be wondering where to start.

10
Ring Of Arcane Locks
Item Type |
Ring |
---|---|
Rarity |
Rare |
Attunement |
No |
When you have this ring in your possession, you can both magically open and seal various doors, windows, or chests. By removing this ring from your finger and placing it inside a nonmagical locking mechanism, you can either seal a lock that has been opened or unlock it, your choice. If the lock is magical, then, similarly to the effects of a Knock spell, you can suppress the effect for one minute. However, the ring is subsequently destroyed if left for longer.
Locked doors, treasure chests, and more are the bane of an expert player’s existence. After all, who knows what valuable loot might be waiting on the other side? This item provides nonspellcasters with a means of unlocking or protecting treasure goods.
9
Gauntlets Of Defense
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Uncommon |
Attunement |
Yes |
When you are attuned to these gauntlets and wielding them, you gain the ability to potentially block incoming ranged attacks, as projectiles seem magically drawn to them. The gauntlets have a number of charges (1d4) per day. By expending one charge, you can use your reaction to reduce the ranged attack roll of an enemy by 1d6 + your proficiency bonus.
By expending two charges, you can subsequently redirect the missile to another target. However, the attack must first miss you to do so. These are great for squishy spellcasters in the backline who want to avoid being pelted by long-range attacks, potentially destroying their concentration.
8
Boots Of Water-Walking
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Uncommon |
Attunement |
Yes |
When you have these boots on your person and are attuned to them, you can walk across bodies of water as though they were solid surfaces, thus negating any difficult terrain you might encounter by traversing them. If you would take fall damage by falling into a body of water, the boots can reduce the damage by 1d12 by softening your landing.

7
Bag Of Eclectic Elixirs
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Very Rare |
Attunement |
No |
This colorful bag has a random, but extremely helpful effect. Once per long rest, you can reach your hand inside the bag and pull out a random potion or elixir. When crafting this item, you can work with your DM to determine 12 different potion effects to use for this bag, thus assigning each one to a different number on the d12, which you roll to determine which potion you get.
These can range from anything from a minor potion of healing to an oil of sharpness. Just make sure you’re not picking too many overpowered potions, otherwise, the item could be broken. For an additional nerf, you can limit the usages of this item to 12, meaning you might not ever see all the potions you can get.
6
Armor Of Force Burst
Item Type |
Armor |
---|---|
Rarity |
Rare |
Attunement |
Yes (Proficiency with Medium Armor required) |
This is a medium piece of armor that, when attuned, can redirect force damage back at opponents of your choosing. At the start of each new day, the armor has 1d6 charges. Whenever you take an attack that deals force damage, you can spend one charge you’ve earned to reduce the damage in half and absorb the kinetic force of the impact into your armor.
From there, you may expend an additional charge as a bonus action to have the force damage redirected out to an opponent within melee range. The damage from the attack is the same as the damage you absorbed. You can also stack damage from multiple attacks, so long as you have enough charges. If you have absorbed damage, but don’t have the right number of charges left to release it, you instead incur the damage.
5
Amulet Of Immobility
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Rare |
Attunement |
Yes |
When attuned to this glittering amulet, it has two functions. First, you may place this amulet on any surface and utter its command word to render it immobile. Unless magic would otherwise end the effect, the amulet will not move from its position until you command it to. From there, should anyone touch the amulet or try to steal it in some other way, you can then begin to see and hear from the amulet within a one-mile radius.

Dungeons & Dragons: 10 Games Of Chance To Run For Players
Looking for some gambling minigames or games of chance to run for your DND table? Look no further than this list.
This is a great tool for stealth and reconnaissance missions. As a high-level player, you can easily place this item in range of a thief or other dastardly villain and potentially spy on them. They may soon discover that the item is magically trapped, so be warned.
4
Talisman Of Abjured Bane
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Very Rare |
Attunement |
Yes |
This talisman prevents the effects of spells like Bane or other magics that might reduce your ability checks or saving throws. When attuned to this talisman and wearing it on your person, you gain advantage on saving throws against effects that might reduce your roll or subsequently impose disadvantage, like Bane or Unsettling Words.
One of the most frustrating things that can happen as a high-level player in DND is when your rolls get nerfed by magical effects on behalf of the DM. This talisman can prevent this handily. This item could easily be considered broken by some DMs, so just discuss it with them ahead of time.
3
Shield Of Counterspell
Item Type |
Shield |
---|---|
Rarity |
Very Rare |
Attunement |
Yes |
For nonspellcasters who are tired of being taken out of fights by powerful magical effects, this next item is for you. When attuned to this shield, you can cast Counterspell from this shield when you are specifically targeted by a spell attack, melee, or ranged attack. This effect does not work on AoE spells; you must be the target of the spell.
You may use this feature once per short or long rest. Your spellcasting ability for this is your Constitution. You can only cast Counterspell at third level; you cannot use higher levels, even if you are a caster.
2
Decanter Of Poison
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Uncommon |
Attunement |
No |
Similar to the Decanter of Endless Water, this decanter is filled with a seemingly endless supply of magical poison or antitoxins. When you take the magic action and utter one of two command words, you can produce either one gallon of poison or one gallon of antitoxin. When you do so, you must wait until the following day to use the effect again.

Dungeons & Dragons: 10 Homebrewed Potion Ideas
Besides brewing regular potions, you can also homebrew unique ones for yourself and your party in DND. Here are some ideas for homebrewed potions.
While it may not seem like much, being able to remove a poison or other condition with an antitoxin can prove incredibly helpful, as can being able to poison an enemy. As you can see, one great way to homebrew weapons as well is to take a pre-existing magic item and tweak it slightly.
1
Helm Of Telekinesis
Item Type |
Wondrous Item |
---|---|
Rarity |
Very Rare |
Attunement |
Yes |
When you are attuned to this helm, you gain the ability to cast the fifth-level spell Telekinesis once per long rest. However, alternatively, you can also use this helm to cast Telekinesis on yourself as a method of flying, unlike the normal spell. You can only use one effect or the other, and you cannot switch midway through.
Not only is this a great way to live out your fantasies of becoming Mangeto, but this helm can offer a lot of creative skill expression. Making minor tweaks to existing spells and items can make a big difference in a high-level campaign.
