The Nightshadow Batterfly is an uncommon bug in Palia that only comes out at night in the forests of Elderwood. It’s a shy little guy that can be difficult to find, but you’ll need to catch some for quests, relic crafting recipes, and weekly gift wants.

What could the ruins be hiding?
And even if you don’t need them for a quest or recipe, they are gorgeous and catching a Star Quality version would look great on display in your home! If you’re having trouble locating this bug, this guide will help you know where to look and how to catch it.
How To Find Nightshadow Batterfly
The Nightshadow Batterfly is a beautiful purple bug that only shows up at night, between the hours of 6pm and 3am (in-game time).
You can find them in any of the forested areas, but the best locations are Jenesse Pass and Deep Woods (on the mushroom platforms attached to the giant trees).
You’ll often find them mixed in around Blushing Batterfly, Cave Piksii, or Veil Piksii. Cave Piksii can sometimes look like the Nightshadow Batterfly in some lighting.
Some Nightshadow Batterflies may be infected, and due to the dark purple of the infected essence, it can be hard to tell which bug it is till you pick it up.
How To Catch Nightshadow Batterfly
Once you are able to locate the Nightshadow Batterfly, they are very easy to catch and only require standard or sneaky smoke bombs. They will be alerted to your presence, though, so you can also use a smoke candle to disguise your presence and sneak up on them.
If you are trying to catch an infected Nightshadow Batterfly, you will have to use Elderwood Smoke Bombs. These are a little weaker than your standard smoke bombs, so it will take a few smoke bombs to stun the batterfly.
You might sometimes receive a Nightshadow Batterfly in a Bug Catching Mystery Bag, which you can get as a reward for finishing a quest, giving an offering at an Umbraan Shrine, or buying it from Subira’s shop at the Elderwood Central Stables.
