The Lord of the Rings has become such a significant Lego partner since the two started working together again in 2023 that every time there’s even a hint of a new set, there tends to be chatter, and often leaks, left and right. That’s why we already knew a Gandalf vs. Balrog set was coming, but now we’ve been given our first official look and can even place pre-orders for Lego’s next LOTR set.
The newly revealed Balrog set will be part of a new range that Lego has launched in 2025 called Book Nooks. The idea of the sets is that, once complete, they can fit neatly onto bookshelves for display. There are three Book Nook sets so far, all of them based on characters, creatures, and locations from famous novels and stories.

Even though it wasn’t officially revealed until today, the Balrog Book Nook has generated the most buzz of the three sets in the new range to date. Now that its store page is live at Lego, we can confirm the piece count and how much it’s going to cost. The toy brick Balrog battle recreation will take 1,201 pieces to build, and it costs $129.99. You can pre-order it right now through the Lego store link in the box below.
Build Your Own Balrog
Then Have Gandalf Not Let It Pass
While $129.99 is still a lot of money for Lego, the Balrog Book Nook is the cheapest of the four Lord of the Rings Lego sets released since 2023. The Rivendell, Barad-dur, and Shire sets start from $270 and are all more than 2,000 pieces. The Balrog set will give Lego-loving Lord of the Rings fans the chance to build something without having to drop $300 on a single set.
The Balrog set is arguably one of the better LOTR sets so far too. While the prior three are based on iconic locations from Middle-earth, the Balrog Book Nook is the first that takes inspiration from a specific moment. The moment Gandalf faces off against a Balrog, seemingly sacrificing himself to save the rest of the party, ensuring the quest to destroy The One Ring can continue.
The set requires you to build your own Balrog and comes with a Gandalf minifigure for it to face off against, complete with a plaque that displays the iconic quite from the scene: “You shall not pass”. The set can be closed so it fits neatly between your books, or you can open it up to reveal the bridge of Khazad-dum in all its glory. Lego has already opened pre-orders for the set, and you won’t have to wait long for it to arrive, with a release date of June 1, 2025.
