GTA 6 Trailer 2 Isn’t That Great According To Veteran Trailer Creator

Share

Summary

  • A veteran trailer artist was not impressed by the second trailer for GTA 6.
  • He hoped to learn a bit more about the plot and characters.

It’s safe to say that trailer two for GTA 6 brought back the hype that died down with the announcement of the delay. Besides dropping on a random Tuesday, the trailer gave us a closer look at dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and their relationship. Besides looking absolutely stunning, it also showed some more characters and activities that will be possible.

Here’s How GTA 6’s Second Trailer Compares To Past Rockstar Games

Rockstar has a formula for second trailers and Grand Theft Auto 6 stuck to it.

It’s hard to convey just how good the trailer looked, and it became all the more impressive when Rockstar revealed that it was a mix of cutscenes and gameplay. Most people were impressed by either the lighting and reflections, while others were enamoured by Lucia herself. Regardless, the trailer was a big hit with everybody. Well, not everybody.

Trailer 2 Of GTA 6 Doesn’t Tell Us Anything

While we got to experience the sights and sounds of Vice City and a whole lot of Jason and Lucia, the trailer didn’t reveal anything about the plot. We know that Lucia was recently released from prison, and that’s about it. This was the main complaint of Derek Lieu, the veteran trailer editor who worked on the likes of Half-Life Alyx and Psychonauts 2.

In a conversation with Aftermath (via GamesRadar), Lieu admitted that the trailer looked amazing, but told us nothing about the game’s plot or motivations.

“A trailer is designed to do this thing well, which is to incite our emotions and show a bunch of stuff from this new thing that we haven’t seen before,” he said. “This trailer, or a bunch of B-roll with music over it, can kind of achieve the same thing. But that doesn’t make it a good trailer. Just because people get hyped, doesn’t mean it’s a good trailer.”

“The only thing we know about these characters is: They do crime and they’re a couple,” continued Lieu. “We have no idea what their motivation is. Why are they doing crime? Are they being forced to do crime? What’s the reason? By the time the first part with the landlord is over, that’s, like, 30 seconds into the trailer – an immense amount of time.”

While Lieu does have a point, perhaps Rockstar doesn’t want us to know anything about the plot yet. Considering the game has been pushed to next year, there might be certain changes that the devs are working on, and it might be too early to reveal them.
