Summary
- Finn is clearly force-sensitive in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but he never gets to become a Jedi like Rey.
- However, in The Rise of Skywalker, John Boyega did film a scene where he yelled, “I’m a Jedi!”
- It was ultimately cut, but as Boyega said, the breadcrumbs left in the film have laid the groundwork for that idea to be explored should Finn ever return.
It’s hinted throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy that Finn is force-sensitive, with The Force Awakens even appearing to set him up as a stormtrooper-turned-Jedi. While it didn’t pan out, John Boyega revealed it was nearly confirmed outright in The Rise of Skywalker.

“There were a couple of takes where I just said it, ‘I’m a Jedi!’ There was a couple. I wanted to say it, when they’re going down into the quicksand,” Boyega said at C2E2 2025 (via Voice Film). “But I appreciate JJ [Abrams] for putting those easter eggs in there and trying to expand so that if there is ever a revisit to Finn there is stuff to play with.”
What John Boyega Would Like To See From Finn
While these takes weren’t used, there’s still room for future projects to explore Finn’s force sensitivity, and finally do the character justice by putting a lightsaber in his hands. Boyega has even given that idea some thought, spitballing during the panel. “Give me a blaster-saber, though. I want the combo,” Boyega said. “Ezra [Bridger] had the combo, right? Give me that guy’s thing. I wanna be more of a Jedi scoundrel.”

We’re finally going to see what shape the Star Wars universe is in post-The Rise of Skywalker with the Rey movie, but given that Boyega only found out about the film when we all did, it doesn’t sound like Finn will play a part. Assuming that she’s rebuilding the Jedi order, not involving the Force-sensitive stormtrooper seems like a strange oversight. Nonetheless, Finn is set to return later this year in a novel following his and Jannah’s exploits.
Star Wars: The Last Order, penned by the award-winning Kwame Mbalia, releasing later this year on October 21, follows as “the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.”
Setting the stage for a new era of Star Wars stories, it puts Finn at the forefront. But hopefully we’ll see Boyega reprise the role in the future, too.
