Summary

  • Although Capcom has previously confirmed that Resident Evil 9 is in development, we know next to nothing about it.
  • That being said, there have been a ton of rumours about the project and what’s being worked on for the series as a whole.
  • One of the most reliable insiders has suggested most of these leaks come from a scrapped version of Resi 9 that got rebooted.

A reliable Capcom insider has shared some details about Resident Evil 9’s development and suggested that it started life as a “big open world multiplayer game” starring Jill and Leon.

For a few years, Capcom was on an absolute roll when it came to Resident Evil releases. Not only did we get a new type of Resident Evil experience with Resi 7 and Village, but we’ve also had multiple big remakes of some of the best games in the series, including Resident Evil 2 and, most recently, Resident Evil 4.

Since the release of Resident Evil 4’s remake two years ago, though, Capcom has been strangely quiet about the series as a whole. We haven’t heard anything concrete about what’s next for the series, outside of Capcom confirming that work on the next game has begun. With Capcom staying mostly silent for now, that’s resulted in a ton of rumours about what Resident Evil 9 is going to be.

Resident Evil 9 Started Development As An Open-World Multiplayer Game, According To Leaker

That’s Changed Thanks To A “Pretty Heavy” Reboot

Over the past few years, we’ve heard a lot about Resident Evil 9, ranging from it being a big open-world game that stars Leon Kennedy to it bringing back Jill Valentine and still making her look as young as ever. It’s hard to keep track of all the rumours surrounding Resi 9, but reliable insider Dusk Golem has shared his thoughts on the latest rumours.

To put it shortly, Dusk Golem starts by saying that most of the rumours he’s heard, such as Jill being in a hospital, are “bulls**t”, and that someone called Andi is the only person with correct information. However, that information is based on an old version of Resident Evil 9, which started development in 2017 after Resi 7 initially underperformed at launch.

And the original version of RE9 was trying to be the opposite of RE7, (IE a big open world multiplayer game). – Dusk Golem

Dusk Golem goes on to say that the original version of Resident Evil 9 was trying to “be the opposite of RE7” and was aiming to be a big open-world multiplayer game that starred Leon and Jill on a fictional island based on Singapore. This was all before Resident Evil 9 got a “pretty heavy reboot” in 2021, around the time Village came out.

That being said, there are a few things from that version that have stayed the same, such as Leon Kennedy being kept as the main character for the new version of Resident Evil 9. Dusk Golem also shared information about other Resident Evil projects, including confirming that Revelations 3 was cancelled some time ago and that the remakes of Code Veronica and 0 are still being worked on.
