Summary
- The recent reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 had a noteworthy absence: a new 3D Mario game.
- Nintendo is aware of the anticipation for a new game and has asked fans to “stay tuned” for more news.
- It’s not concrete, but it does at least suggest that it’s a likely possibility for the Switch 2 at some point.
Nintendo of America’s president, Doug Bowser, has told fans to “stay tuned” when it comes to the prospect of a new 3D Mario game coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Although this month’s reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 has been somewhat marred in a surprising amount of controversy for such an anticipated console, the one thing that Nintendo absolutely got right was the games. Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, The Duskbloods, Kirby Air Riders, and a whole lot more made for a star-studded line-up that’s easy to get excited about.

Having Donkey Kong star in the Switch 2’s first big platformer is a gamble, but some hands-on time with Bananza proves it was a smart call.
That being said, there was one massive omission that we were all certain we’d see announced at the event, or at the very least confirmed and teased to be coming soon – a new 3D Mario. Whenever a new Nintendo console launches, Mario isn’t far behind, but that wasn’t the case for the Nintendo Switch 2.
If You’re Waiting For A New 3D Mario, You’ll Have To “Stay Tuned”
Keep Your Hat On
While most of us have figured out that Nintendo is instead giving that spotlight to Donkey Kong for once and seemingly even putting the Odyssey team on DK’s big comeback, that still leaves a big question as to whether we’ll even see a new 3D Mario. As pointed out by My Nintendo News, this very subject was broached with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser by CNN earlier this week.
When asked specificaly about a new mainline Mario game coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 and why it wasn’t announced alongside the console, Bowser simply said to “stay tuned” and noted that the company has a big catalogue of games. That catalogue is one that Bowser is “sure will make its way to the platform.”
Stay tuned. You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform. – Doug Bowser
It’s about as much of a concrete answer as you’d expect from the typically secret Nintendo, but it does suggest that it’s well aware of the anticipation for a new 3D Mario and wants it to happen for the Switch 2. It’s always seemed like just a matter of time, but that’s even more the case now.
