The Dark Ages Dreadmace Confirms How Powerful Doomguy Is

Share

Summary

  • Real ones already know that the Doom Slayer is one of the most powerful characters in gaming history.
  • The Dark Ages shows that off in full force, but there’s one weapon in particular that shows off how powerful Doomguy is.
  • The Dreadmace may look a little unassuming but its codex entry confirms a wild detail about how heavy it is.

One of the new weapons in Doom: The Dark Ages, the Dreadmace, offers even more ridiculous proof of how strong the Doom Slayer canonically is.

In the world of video games, there is a near-infinite supply of contenders for the most powerful protagonist in gaming. Characters like Kratos, Dante, Sonic, Master Chief, the Dragonborn, and Cloud all instantly jump to mind for their ridiculous feats of strength against massive enemies, but let’s not all kid ourselves here – we know the Doom Slayer is number one.

A dark age for cutscenes.

Ever since his first game, Doomguy has been making it very clear that there’s not a single obstacle that he can’t rip and tear his way through. We’ve seen him kill gods, demons, armies, and pretty much everything in between, and that strength is shown in full force in Doom: The Dark Ages. In fact, it might be our best proof yet of just how powerful he really is.

Doom: The Dark Ages’ Dreadmace Is Solid Proof That The Doom Slayer Is Gaming’s Strongest Character

You Wouldn’t See Geralt Holding Infinite Mass, Would You?

From the moment Doomguy first drops into the battlefield in Doom: The Dark Ages, it’s clear that he’s at the peak of his strength and nearly unstoppable. His real power doesn’t show its face until the final few chapters of the game, however, and they’re truly shown off when he picks up a new melee weapon called the Dreadmace.

Beyond being the best melee weapon in the game by a long shot, the Dreadmace has an interesting piece of lore attached to it that was highlighted by Redditor NotZealouss on the Doom subreddit. If you look at the codex entry for the Dreadmace, you can see an interesting descriptor that highlights Doomguy’s strength.

According to the codex, the Dreadmace is “infinitely dense and rolling with energy beneath the surface”, which basically means it has an infinite amount of power. I probably don’t need to tell you this, but that’s about as heavy as it gets, making it all the more impressive that the Slayer is able to swing it around with one hand like it’s nothing.

The Dreadmace does have a long recharge time, though, so I have to assume it does take a little bit more effort for the Slayer to wield than other weapons. Still, the fact he can pick it up at all is a feat of strength.

I’m sure that Doom naysayers are going to try and argue that there’s some dark magic attached to the weapon that makes it possible for the Slayer to wield it, but the codex still makes it clear how powerful of a weapon it is. If we ever needed more proof that the Slayer could absolutely take Kratos down, here it is.
