The Final Evoltions We Want To See For The Starters In Pokemon Legends ZA

Share

When revisiting regions in Pokemon games, usually the starter Pokemon in the game gets some form of new addition. Whether it’s a new typing, new abilities, or a new ability such as Mega Evolution or Dynamax, it’s always exciting to see old favorites get a new coat of paint. Pokemon Legends Arceus gave the starters new appearances and new typing combinations.

What Mega Evolutions Will Pokemon Legends: Z-A Add?

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is bringing back Mega Evolution, but what Pokemon could receive the treatment?

Hisuian Decidueye became a Grass/Fighting-type, Hisuian Typhlosion became a Fire/Ghost-type, and Hisuian Samurott became a Water/Dark-type. So, with Mega Evolution being the ability introduced in the Kalos region, what can we expect for our starters this time around? So what type should Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile become when they evolve in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

Chikorita Final Evolution

Originally a starter from the Johto region, Chikorita was first available in Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, reappearing in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Chiokrita evolves into Bayleef, and eventually Meganium. Meganium is strictly a Grass-type Pokemon, which unfortunately leaves this dinosaur-like Pokemon susceptible to several weaknesses. There are a few beneficial evolution types that would create an interesting and beneficial final evolution type.

Grass/Fairy-Type

Bayleef could easily join the ranks of the popular Grass/Fairy-type Pokemon. The power of Whimsicott in competitive is due to its defensive nature. Moonblast and Energy Ball are both powerful moves for their respective types, and though not ideal, the Overgrow ability will boost the strength of grass moves even more when your HP is low. With a high Defense and Special defense and access to STAB (same type attack bonus) moves, Meganium with Fairty-type can be a serious contender for a bulky defensive Pokemon with great offense.

Grass/Water-Type

Pokemon: Ludicolo from the anime looking excited and smiling

Like Ludicolo, the best thing to do is to counter one of your biggest weaknesses. That means a Grass/Water-type Meganium with a high Special Defense stat can fight back against Fire-type Pokemon with ease. A water typing will also add unique strengths and weaknesses, covering some of the weaknesses Meganium has. On top of this, Meganium will be one of the only Grass/Water-type Pokemon aside from the Lombre evolutionary line.

Tepig Final Evolution Line

Tepig comes from the Unova region. As one of the starters there, he’ll be introduced to the Kalos region. As the Fire-type starter, he evolves into Pignite, and finally into Emboar. As one of the ever-popular Fire/Fighting-type Pokemon, it’ll be refreshing to see Emboar receive a new typing to stand out from the other starters there. So, instead of Fire/Fighting, what types would work best for Tepig when he evolves in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

Fire/Grass

Not only would this design be cool, but Tepig would eventually become an Emboar, becoming one of very few Pokemon with this typing. While unconventional, the combination would provide another target for the move Spicy Extract, and its only weaknesses would be Flying, Rock, and Poison-type Pokemon. With a high HP and Attack stat, Emboar could gain access to some physical Fire and Grass-type moves that can really pack a punch against an opponent.

Which Pokemon have been announced for Pokemon Legends: Z-A?

Fire/Dragon

Add a ton of resistances and the ability to buff yourself, and you’ll quickly see why a Fire/Dragon-type Emboar will be well worth an addition to any team. Again, this would be another design that is sure to pop off, especially if these starters get their own Mega evolutions. As one of the few Fire/Dragon-type Pokemon to ever exist, Emboar could make a very big impact in the competitive scene like some of the Pokemon there, such as competitive staple Turtonator. Speaking of Mega Pokemon, Mega Charizard X also shares the Fire/Dragon typing, so why not add another starter to the roster?

Totodile Final Evolution

The adorable Big Jaw Pokemon Totodile is the water starter from Generation 2. This Jhoto starter, similar to Chikorita, is traveling quite a way to be introduced to the Kalos region. This popular little pal even saw fame from an appearance in the movie Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. Even Ash caught his own Totodile, making this one of the more popular starters in the media. So, what could be better than the mono Water-type Feraligatr?

Water/Electric

Another category with very few Pokemon, a Feraligatr that was both Water and Electric-type would create a fantastic Mega evolution. Think about Feraligatr in its current form, but with electricity coursing through its Mega-evolved form, and you get something akin to what Mega Metagross has visually. A Pokemon looming over others like a Mega Tyrannitar, with an intimidating and electrified presence.

Are you ready to get desperate?

Still, the Water/Electric typing only leaves the Pokemon susceptible to two weaknesses: Grass and Ground. On top of that, if you can get an ability such as Volt Absorb to catch unaware players who want to challenge you, you can Mega evolve and turn that electric damage into converted health. Throw in a move like Volt Switch from Wash Rotom, and you’ve got a strong attack to match.

Water/Fairy

This might be unexpected, but a great way to deal with Dragon-type characters is to have a Fairy-type attached to you. A Water/Fairy Feraligatr would take no damage at all from Dragon-type moves. Not only that, but it would be strong against six other typings for a total of seven type advantages. Fire, Water, Ice, Fighting, Bug, and Dark would only deal half damage, while Dragon would deal no damage. Talk about an advantage.

In exchange Feraligatr would only be weak to Grass, Electric, and Poison-type moves. There’s a reason you’ve seen Azumarill running several event raids: because of this advantage and its moveset. While we don’t know what it’ll look like, it would still be really cool to see that design and strength from what used to be a baby Totodile.
